There are many glorious things about a piano lamp that simply can’t be accomplished by an ordinary light or lamp. By using a piano lamp to illuminate your sheet music, you can increase the visibility of the music considerably, while improving the general atmosphere of the room.
One of the primary uses of a piano lamp is, quite simply, to increase the light in the room. Now, before you tell me how blatantly obvious that is, I’ll clarify. I’m referring to those rooms that simply don’t have enough light in them in the first place. This may be due to poor lighting or a lack of windows, or perhaps the color on your walls doesn’t reflect light well. Whatever the reason, you’re looking for a piano lamp not because you can’t read sheet music, but because you can’t read anything at all!
Another reason to look for a lamp for your piano is because of its placement. While any lamp provides illumination, a piano lamp provides illumination specifically toward one area: your piano’s music stand. No matter how many lamps you place around a room, you aren’t going to be able to light up your music as well as you would with a lamp targeted directly at it. It’s like hiring someone to hold a flashlight onto your music while you play – only a lot less creepy for everyone involved.
Piano desk lamps are also helpful in that they don’t take up as much space as other lamps. Because they only need to shine light on a very small, specific space, they don’t have to worry (as other lamps might) about making sure there’s light in the rest of the room. A lamp for the piano has one specific purpose: spread light onto the sheet music. You don’t need a heavy floor lamp to do that; you can simply place a small desk lamp-style piano lamp behind your music stand.
And, because piano lamps are specifically designed for pianos, you get light designed to hit the sheet music exactly. While a desk lamp is designed to spread light on a small amount of space, it’s not designed to hit an exact place. It can also be difficult to look at, because it spreads just as much light into your eyes as onto the music. A piano light will point the light directly at the sheet music, and avoid shining light into your face, so you can still look straight at the music stand, even though there’s a bright light there.
